On the one hand, our team has been working in this world we’ve created for a little over a year. We’ve combed over the most granular details and poured over every panel, every letter, every color. We’ve been intentional in the time we’ve taken to bring this world to life. To finally share this with people outside of our very small circle is thrilling, to say the least.

On the other hand, we’re at that stage of artistic creation where we’re so close to sharing our baby with the rest of the world—scary stuff! We live in angry, reactive times, and there’s always going to be that creeping feeling that someone, somewhere, will dislike or even hate what we’ve created. I’ve come to terms with the inevitability of this and realized something very important: when I think about how many people may come to love this story, find comfort or hope or courage in it, all those feelings of dread wash away.

So! Feelings aside, let’s talk a little bit about the world of THE MEDIUM. By now, you’ve likely seen some of our teaser videos, maybe a little bit of the art, and caught yourself thinking, “What is this even about?” Well, it’s about many things! It’s about friendship after the luster of your early 20s has worn off. It’s about paranormal powers and possession. It’s about technofascism, a term recently coined in our modern age, and what people can do to unite against it and crush their oppressors.

Time to chew on a few details to flesh this out for ya. Our story takes place in the year 2284 in Pax City, a megacity on the western coast of the United Regions of America and the nation's sitting capital. The city itself is something I’ve taken to calling “cyberpostpunk”. Think 80s/90s analog tech nostalgia mixed with green futurism. Skyscrapers with flecks of trees. Massive superhighways with solar panels. The best comparison I could think of for your mind’s eye would be the 2026 adaptation of “The Ghost In The Shell” by the geniuses at ScienceSaru, but a tiiiiny bit more climate-friendly. You should watch it if you haven’t already. It’s excellent.

We’re following the story of Cosmo Crane, a laissez-faire, late-20s British-American artist-turned-activist and agitator of the Liberation Party, the new authoritarian ruling party seeking to plunge the world back into the digital dark ages of algorithms and artificial intelligence. Cosmo has come into some incredibly strange powers thanks to a few ghosts who unceremoniously possessed him. The ghosts are with him every waking moment of the day and serve as guides, mentors, and even foils at times. The powers they’ve bestowed all revolve around a single keyword you may or may not have seen pop up a few times in one of our teasers. I had so much fun dreaming them up, and I think you’ll enjoy them when you see them in action.

There’s a whole story about how the United Regions came about and how it operates today, and I promise we’ll tell you in time. The most important detail, however, is that the United States rebuilt itself and outlawed what they deemed to be “malware”; social media, AI, streaming services, and loads more. It forced citizens to turn back to physical art for entertainment, and that proved to be the catalyst that made Pax City the nation’s hub for just that: art, free thinking, and progress.

If you think about it, art takes on tons of forms, doesn’t it? Take this comic, for example. Bringing this to life was a wonderful collaboration of quite a few artists who decided to spend their free time on a crazy idea. Someone wrote the story, someone edited that story, someone laid out the script into proposed panels, someone penciled and inked the illustrations, someone colored the illustrations, someone lettered the story into the comic, all to bring this to you. That’s a lot of artists working together! All of those artists brought their crafts together to share something with people. I just think that’s so important, and I find that a lot of the best art comes forth through collaborating with others.

That’s a big keyword for THE MEDIUM: Collaboration. When I set out to create this world, I wanted to do something I hadn’t necessarily seen done in comics before. I wanted to try to bleed the world of Pax City into our living, breathing existence. I wanted to give you the chance to dive deeper into what we’re doing and become a part of it. Something that grandiose and crazy requires people as equally crazy and hungry to create something cool, to come together and try stuff, just to see if it could work.

The first big collaboration I want to talk about is music. Music can bring people together better than most anything on the planet. Isn’t it fun to create playlists for people and share them in the hopes that they’ll find a new artist they can fall in love with? Remember that awesome show you went to with your friends? Wasn’t the soundtrack for that movie you saw unforgettable?

I want to bring that feeling to comics. Each issue of THE MEDIUM will be soundtracked by a musician or band who is near and dear to my heart. In the back of each issue will be a little blurb on said artist, along with a QR code you can scan. From there, you can flip BACK to the front of the issue and look for clues in the panels. Those clues will cue you to play a song of the corresponding number on the playlist until you see the NEXT number, at which time you’ll switch to the next song. Tada, you’ve got a soundtrack for your comic! Fun, right? The artists will also add some extra songs at the end of the playlist that’ll do stuff like encompass the overall feel of the issue, give you a peek into what they’re loving, or show you some of their own stuff! I thought it’d be an interesting way to bring in another sense for us to tickle.

The collaborations most definitely won’t stop there, either. No way. We’ve got a ton more we’re gonna try to get you even deeper into our world. Short films, restaurant menu collaborations, DJ sets, live theatre, concerts, radio broadcasts, murals, graffiti, an ARG, and an old-school GeoCities-style website that you’re on right now are just a few of the things on the horizon. It’s gonna be a blast, and my only hope is that you have as much fun as we’ve had coming up with all of it.

It’s a Herculean effort that can only be brought to life by people like you. Our Kickstarter is going live soon, and you’ll be able to have a direct hand in getting this world off the ground floor with us. We want to build this world together with you and send it into the stratosphere. I truly believe we can do it, and I can’t wait to share more of this world with you.

See you soon!
